Due to the fear of people stealing my riffs for their own because of insufficient copyrighting measures I've decided to stop this. It is definitely something I'll continue in the future. Thanks to anyone who actually checked out my music. It's very much appreciated.
Until the near future,

...a collaboration of noise
March 10, 2008 - 5:58 PM
Back on track. I have my music recording software back up and running so everything is back to normal.
Since it's release on Jan 29th of this year and me picking it up on Jan 30th there really hasn't been too many days where I have gone without listening to at least one track from Protest The Hero's latest album Fortress. This album is so incredibly filled with talent and just pure insanity. Personally, as with any of Protest's releases, a first listen through of the album will give you a testing the waters touch and leave you with the feeling asking "What the fuck just happened?" due to the shear complexity and intricateness of the music. The second time through you'll hear so much more that you missed the first time and again you'll be asking "What just happened?". Wash, rinse, repeat about 5 more times until you become familiar with each song and you'll be listening to straight up the most complex, intricate collaboration of sound you'll ever here produced by anyone in that age demographic. I speak the truth when I say it took me about 8 play throughs of the entire album to fully appreciate the musical story going on here.
So why do I bring up this what seems to be album review? I would pinpoint this album as the eye opening experience for me. This album made triggered the internal realization of where I want to go with music and what it is I hope it will bring me for myself or for anyone who happens to listen to my music. Since this album, without even attempting to learn anything contained within it, I found myself gradually trying techniques or structures within their music to enhance my musical ability. As a personal reflection I feel that I have come a long way since 2 months ago in writing and I hope that this exponential increase in musical awareness continues for a long time to come.
Also, Pat Clancy (former bandmate, Age of Discretion), gave me the heads up on a youtube video where our former band was mentioned by Stuart Aiken of These Silhouettes. I couldn't believe what I heard but props to Stuart on that one. Check the video here, around the 2:10 mark.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTL88Dobghs&feature=related
And if you havn't heard of These Silhouettes before, definitely look them up on MySpace or whatver.
I plan on getting ahold of a multieffects pedal in a few days so I have a treat to post when I do get a hold of it.
NEW: I decided to give a "my musical inspirational song of the day" just for kicks. So, here it goes...fittingly...
SONG OF THE DAY: Protest The Hero - Bloodmeat
So, to the riff...
Here's a riff that I wrote yesterday with some time to kill before heading out. I was just improvising along and come up with this little guy. It's pretty much along the same lines as with the other stuff posted on here so far but it's a bit easier to play. There wasn't any particular influence here. Enjoi

Due to having to reformat my computer and losing my recording tools and such, today's blog is currently on a hiatus. I hate technology. The blog will resume tommorow.

...the eye of the storm
March 08, 2008 - 6:28 PM
Half a metre of snow expected this weekend. I can't even begin to comprehend that. I went on an adventure over to Nicole's house today and God must love me because he sent millions of ice pelleters flying in my face. Surviving that, I purpled my Queen's jacket and now my fingers are stained purple. It is the weirdest thing seeing that while watching your hands play guitar. And sure enough, God loved me on the way back home and sent the wind into my face again.
This snow storm weather is getting to me slowly. That and Kingston and is very stagnant so it's attributing me with a pretty mundane personality and overall unmotivated slightly bitter mood. Because of this I thought I'd throw some irony into todays posting.
Here is a riff that I wrote during the Christmas break of '07-'08. This came to me while I was just improvising and messing around while I had 15 minutes to kill before going out. My motivation for this was to completely forget all of the past music I had written since I started playing because those songs were more geared towards simplistic "love" songs which I have come to despise. Haha.
I am definitely focused on establishing my own sort of genre on acosutic. Something I personall have not heard yet. Take all the technicality and heavyness of a defining punk, rock, alternative genre band and all of those defining elements and apply to the acoustic guitar. It is already visible in what's been posted and it'll continue to be seen as time goes on. Anyways,
Question: What do you get when you are trying not to write a love ballad?
Answer: A love ballad. (A bit more technical though)
Here it is in all it's glory. ...the eye of the storm

...A little touch of silence
March 07, 2008 - 8:41 PM
Go ahead and throw some comments at me here or on the youtube links. I want to hear your feedback on this whole blog idea, the music, or anything about anything really. Give me a shout, let me know how you're doing etc.
Today has been one hell of a day school related so not a whole lot got done really and so this entry is going to be short. I did not have that much time to write / play guitar so I went ahead and recorded a riff that I wrote about 8 months ago or so. At the time I was just experimenting with a lot of hammer ons and pulls off to open so it definitely can be heard in this one. It's a step in a different direction as oppose to what has been posted on here so far. It's just a more quite, calming, peaceful rif and it is, a little touch of silence.

...A look towards the future
March 06, 2008 - 2:11 PM
A few days ago I signed a lease with my buddies Greg and Kev who are, in my opinion, better guitar players than me. That can only mean that I'm going to improve immensely over the next school year and I'm super stoked about that. We have abolished the idea of having a living room and are turning it into a jam space which I guess is a living room since we all live and breathe music.
Since starting this I have convinced myself even more so to start actually taking guitar lessons, learning theory, new techniques, and proper techniques of the ones I already know. I honestly can't wait for what the future brings musically.
Also, a little bet I'm having with my girlfriend is starting to drive me insane so any tips on how to win that competition are welcome and greatly appreciated. Haha.
So I decided to bring my guitar upstairs with me while I was caramelizing my onions for my lunch because I'd have time to kill. This was in hopes of busting out a new riff before the meal was done. I managed to do it and I must say that I'm kind of impressed with myself with this riff. No particular influence except for trying to find something in drop "D" tuning. Enjoi
UPDATE: I MOVED ALL OF THE AUDIO FILES TO YOUTUBE FOR EASE. Youtube just offers me direct links to each riff and a bigger storage capacity. Plus, it's youtube.

...proving ground
March 05, 2008 - 3:20 PM
Best news of life today. All of my classes and my midterm got cancelled so I'm super stoked about that. Thank you freezing rain and baby Jesus.
I decided to post a riff that I am immensely proud of for reasons I do not know. Well it is a combination of 2 riffs. This riff is all picking which, if you listen enough of my stuff, you'll end up realizing I love doing it.
I wrote this riff in the winter of '07 on a day where I believe I was listening to some of Avenged Sevenfold's "City of Evil". To this day that album stands as one of my favorite overall. Definitely check it out if you havn't and do NOT think for one second that if you have only heard "Bat Country" that you have in away done yourself justice. Anyways, after listening to some of the album I just straight up told myself I'm going to write a riff that just sounds badass and technical. Add some backing to the riff and you'll get the picture. Enjoi!
